More about the piece:
Liberation psychology informs us of the vast interconnectedness of culture, psyche, self, community within differing contexts. To seek liberation- within oneself, or as a community- within socio-political contexts, and social constructs is a transformational message that is the foundation of this piece.
What informs how we identify? What ties us to our cultures- and is it strong enough to endure generations? If so- what are those symbols that have endured? If not, can we find them again and fortify them?
I’ve always known my dad to wear a religious medal- a St. Christopher medal. Religion doesn’t hold a particular weight in my life as it may for others- yet exploring the idea of sanctifying a concept is appealing. Re-creating this cultural artifact which is a part of my identity and ties me to my culture, yet on my own terms- resonates with me.
Language is a long list of paradoxes. A vessel, an obstacle, a means of being “enough”, exclusionary in its nature, yet a beautiful connection point. The act of translating “seek liberation” into Spanish was another form of art within this piece. My imperfect journey of re-learning a language that has been lost throughout generations and assimilation is a form of art and self empowerment. busca por la liberacíon could mean: find liberation, seek liberation, search for liberation - depending on personal and contextual interpretation.
Monarch butterflies are a familiar, yet comforting theme and symbol. They represent collective movement, migration and the resilience of a being- even when faced with untenable or unwelcoming circumstances.
